Residential Treatment for Adolescent Females

Mesilla Valley Hospital’s Trauma-Informed Adolescent Residential Treatment Center (RTC) is for girls ages 12–17 who require intensive and structured treatment for emotional, behavioral, psychological and substance abuse problems. Adolescents that meet criteria for RTC placement may be experiencing issues like:

  • Depression
  • Suicidal and/or homicidal thoughts
  • Drug and alcohol abuse
  • Addiction
  • Anxiety and panic attacks
  • Psychological issues related to trauma (i.e. flashbacks, nightmares, irritability)
  • Self-harming behaviors (i.e. cutting, burning, pulling out hair)
  • Anger/aggression/mood swings
  • Sexualized behaviors
  • Other behavioral concerns

Our program is a strengths-based approach that recognizes many adolescents with mental health issues have experienced trauma at some point in their lives, including:

  • Sexual/physical/psychological abuse
  • Neglect/abandonment
  • Loss of loved ones
  • Incarceration of parent(s)
  • Exposure to violence or relentless stress
  • Bullying

Behavioral Health Services at the Adolescent Residential Treatment Center

The philosophical foundation of the RTC program is based on the Trauma-Informed Treatment Model, which focuses on the belief that severe, chronic, unresolved trauma and attachment requires a different approach to treatment. Trauma-informed RTC treatment at Mesilla Valley Hospital includes:

  • Solution-focused individual, group and family therapy
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Motivational interviewing
  • Twelve-step programming for addiction
  • Medication management
  • Therapeutic recreation, including a ropes course
  • Attendance at an on-site, licensed school

Treatment is provided in a locked, secure setting, with 24-hour nursing supervision. Each RTC patient has a treatment team that includes:

  • Psychiatrist and/or Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)
  • Psychiatric nurses
  • Licensed therapists
  • Adjunctive staff
  • Educational specialists
  • Mental health technicians
